J O’Connell
J O’Connell’s pub, popularly known as ‘Mrs. O’s’ or ‘Yankee’s famously featured in the
Guinness Christmas ad, sits atop the Hill of Skryne, overlooking the Boyne Valley and the Hill of Tara in Co Meath. It has been in the O’Connell family since at least the 1850s with six generations of the family being involved with it. The pub has remained unchanged for over a century. You will find no music, TV, or Wi-Fi. Just good old fashioned hospitality, a crackling fire, perfectly poured drinks and a heartfelt welcome. About the artistsRafał Król was born and raised in Bielsko-Biała, Poland, a small and picturesque city near the Beskid Mountains once known for its Fiat factory, which produced the iconic Fiat 126p. After Poland joined the European Union in 2004 and borders opened, he moved to Ireland, where he has lived ever since. He purchased his first camera—a compact Pentax S30—to document his time abroad, and what began as a simple fascination with photographing everything around him gradually evolved into a deep passion for minimalistic black-and-white seascape and landscape photography.
Rafał’s photography has been exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy’s Annual Art Exhibition (Dublin, 2014 and 2018), the Royal Ulster Academy (Belfast, 2015), and The Library Project (Dublin, 2018–2024). His work has also appeared in publications including Square Magazine (Canada), B+W Photography (UK), and Analog Magazine (Switzerland), among others.
